A quilt is meant to cover the top of the mattress and hang a little over each side. How far it hangs, the drop, is what decides whether a size looks right on your bed. Here is how our four sizes sit on the most common mattresses.
The four sizes at a glance
| Set | Quilt | Pillow shams | Best for | Drop each side* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 59" × 70" | 2 × 20" × 30" | Single bed, daybed, guest room | about 10" |
| Twin | 69" × 90" | 2 × 20" × 26" | Twin and twin XL | about 15" |
| Queen | 90" × 90" | 2 × 20" × 26" | Full and queen | about 15" on a queen |
| King | 104" × 94" | 2 × 20" × 36" | King and California king | about 14" on a king |
*Worked out from standard mattress widths (twin 38", queen 60", king 76"). Measurements are approximate and a quilt can finish 1–2" smaller after quilting.
Three questions that settle it
- How wide is your mattress? Measure across the top. The quilt should be at least 20" wider so each side is covered.
- How deep is it? Most mattresses are 9–12" deep. If yours is deeper, or has a topper, go up one size so the sides stay covered.
- Do you like a tailored or a generous look? A drop of 10–12" looks neat and tucked. A drop of 14–16" reaches further down the sides and looks more relaxed.
Where the shams go
Each set comes with two matching pillow shams. They slip over standard pillows (not included) and sit at the head of the bed, above the top edge of the quilt.
